“What first seemed science fiction, is now an undeniable inconvenient truth.” – Leonardo DiCaprio, from LIVEEARTH
Di Caprio has long been an activist on the global warming bandwagon. He introduced former President Al Gore at Live Earth’s – Giants Stadium concert this afternoon. Gore came upon the stage and ushered these words, “You are Live Earth.” Then I heard Alicia Keys yell out, “We’ve got to make a change today and do something different.”
Gosh, it all got me all gushy inside and thinking on a deeper level not just about the environment, but how we treat each other as human beings on this planet. I’ve had an ear to the tube while preparing for my show today and I have to say I’m actually inspired.
No matter the social issue, whether it impacts our lives or workplaces there seems to be this new kind of courage to step up to the plate. At least on the surface. I’m not going to be cynical today… no no no. Today, I’m going to put aside the pessimism,to concentrate on the positive.
I know this gig has provided fodder for the critics lair, but hey this one day raises awareness. It’s an exercise in collective consciousness. When so many concentrate on one issue, energy shoots in a direction even for a little while – and can’t help but bring one to deeper thought, raise questions and perhaps call people and corporate America to action.
From a marketing angle, and I’m gonna have to be honest here, companies who sponsored this event are getting a nice audience. On seven continents, it’s a win win. Advertisers are reaching everyone from the Gen x’s and Gen y’s – to the boomers in one shot. It’s actually brilliant. Capitalism can help the earth – while growing a large audience and driving profits. Go figure.
