Memories of 9/11 and Inspiration to Move On in the Spirit of Personal Development
As I watched the morning commemoration of the events of September 11th, I was brought back to my own personal experience. At the time, I was a reporter at Marketplace Morning Report in the New York City bureau working alongside national radio news veteran Bob Moon. For many weeks that followed I would sleep on Bob’s couch after 10-12 hour days of reporting, and then some nights and weekends I’d volunteer with the children of the families who were impacted by the terror attacks.
As much as Bob and I would try to explain to our colleagues who lived elsewhere how difficult it was to work and live in NYC at that time, I always felt many never truly understood how excruciatingly painful and nearly debilitating it was.
When the Towers fell, I lost a wonderful cameraman named Glen Pettit, along with several other friends and acquaintances. Even six years later, the images still bring a lot of emotion. Today was no different. But as in years past, we move on to do what is in front of us, one day at a time.
For me, on this anniversary, it meant speaking about the lessons I learned after 9/11 – to 150 managers at a utility company. I focused on the value of human capital, the great need we have as a society for worklife balance, and the responsibility to raise consciousness in the business environment. Part of that process is sharing what we’ve learned with others, as we all move on.
I wasn’t going to post today, but then I received a comment from Mel at Monday Morning Power. He reminded me about the Personal Development list of witty bloggers that Priscilla Palmer has been compiling and sharing with the masses. He was the nudge I needed.
These bloggers are working hard to get positive messages out to the public. So in the spirit of moving on – here is the list of those who continue to inspire thousands every day. Check out Priscilla’s blog for more information on how you can add to, and publish the list.
My thanks to Mel at Monday Morning Power for the heads up, and his kind message of awareness.

Judy,
Comment made on September 11th, 2007 at 10:02 pmVery nice touch to the list. I wish I had thought of it that way. Well done!!!
Excellent post,
Comment made on September 11th, 2007 at 11:24 pmEven though I was not in NYC at that moment, I do remember how painful it was to see that disaster happen. Without saying that a couple of good friends were lost at that incident. The whole point is to keep moving forward and try not to make that experience the only one experience in your life… there are many other things where you can focus on to keep moving forward and that should be your goal in life…
Well done. Thanks for the mention.
Comment made on September 12th, 2007 at 12:13 amMy best wishes.
That is terrible that you lost your good friend the cameraman. Thank you, Judy, for reminding us. All the best.

Wow … you certainly put things in perspective. Thank you for that and for the positive, uplifting, hopeful message you offer. I’m honored to be on the list that you’ve posted – even more so after you shared your kind regards for those of us hoping to inspire and empower others to find their own way in living successful, happy, and fulfilling lives. Thank you for making my day, and warm regards to you and yours.
David

Comment made on September 12th, 2007 at 11:50 amI just wanted to stop by and say thank you for the mention!
The list is amazing and I am glad to be a part of it; thanks again!
Have a great night!
Comment made on September 12th, 2007 at 4:50 pmY’all really inspired me today. I had a day away from the newsroom to indulge in the blogesphere. It was nice to have thoughtful company. There are many future blog scenarios flittering in my soul as a result.
Comment made on September 12th, 2007 at 5:10 pmFondly, Judy
Thank you for posting the list. I really appreciate it.
The memories of 9-11 still shake the soul. I try to find the good in everything. When it comes to 9-11, I try to focus on the fact that I am grateful to be a free American, and the celebration of life.
Comment made on September 13th, 2007 at 2:43 pmJudy, from the other side of the world we watched these events in horror. Though you write eloquently, we can’t imagine what it was like to be in amongst it all. To have lost your friends, to have helped the suffering … thankyou for sharing some of your experience with us and it’s great to hear you have found such valuable lessons to teach others from it.
