We all indulge in watching video on-line at work at one time or another, but research from Nielsen Online finds that the workday is now prime time for video watching. The Center for Media Research breaks down the results from Nielsen which might have incredible implications for broadcast commercial television, companies which choose to peddle products via the Internet during the workday, and productivity in the workplace.
Here's the skinny according to the Research Brief on Mediapost.com:
"The recently released report says that 65
percent of online video viewers stream content between 9am – 5pm Monday
through Friday, compared to 51 percent of online video viewers who log
on between 6am – 8pm on weekends."
The top sites vying for those surfing during working hours:
- YouTube
- Fox Interactive Media
- Yahoo!
Unless employees are watching instructional videos on YouTube regarding workplace practices, I'm going to bet they're checking out the latest music videos or animal stunts. As for Fox Interactive Media or Yahoo! – workers could be downloading anything from a helicopter police chase to business news. Whatever the content – do you think it's necessarily taking away from workplace productivity? If so – should management keep an eye on such things or is it up to the employee to monitor their own usage?
