Thanks for visiting Kingsley. Respect seems to have gone out the window. Even before the economic meltdown. It will be interesting to observe whether the 'r" word becomes more important as businesses take notice of their human capital in a new way because retaining skilled talent is paramount in a tight economy. Companies have slimmed down - but it might be hard to keep the good employees as the market improves.

"Business and corporate America in general needs to be galvanized at a deeper level with regard to the treatment of human beings at work"

This is so true. I have had clients report that they have been victims of bullying, yelling and verbal abuse in the workplace. People need to be reminded that high pressure and tight deadlines are not an excuse to dispense with respect.

Leanne, Thanks for your thoughts. Gender neutral policy is not around the corner - kind of a pipe dream. But my emphasis is on raising awareness and triggering conversation around the concept of treating employees like human beings. Period.

Great point about the generational concerns. It's another piece of the puzzle that muddles the discourse on work life issues. One thing is for sure - it's a brand new world and we all need to wake up. The idea of "outing" employers who are not gender neutral sounds radical - but I suspect it would get a nice amount of press! Go for it.

Great post and great discussion. Gender neutrality at work would be wonderful...but I think there are some generational issues at work and it will take some time.

But I do feel the work world is becoming more gender neutral and will continue to do so. I think if we all thought of ourselves as workers and not male or female workers...that would also help.

I also think "outing" employers who are not gender neutral is a big part of the process. Let's not all silently watch as deserving co-workers get passed over due to demographics. Let's stand up for them and ourselves much like your friend did. And be ready to walk away if we are not treated fairly (easier said than done in this economy, I realize).
